CULTURAL AWARENESS

Though general rules are important, much attention should also be paid to personal & cultural differences in communication styles and methods. There exist some pitfalls you should consider in each specific case.

Our greetings to everyone!

Etiquette prompts us how to be an effective communicator, how to build a network of contacts and turn it into mutually beneficial relationships. Relationships are built over time and should always be based on trust. In any win/win relationships both parties shall bring 100% at the table. They should agree ashore not to be disappointed later on. Misunderstanding may course a situation when trust becomes damaged.

Though general rules are important, much attention should also be paid to personal & cultural differences in communication styles and methods. There exist some pitfalls you should consider in each specific case.

To give a few examples, if you hear the phrase “It’s not bad” in the UK it may mean that you have done it very well. Though in Germany you will probably think that you need to make significant corrections to your piece of work.

They say that if you deal with a person from Dubai, he will offer you a 5-page paper describing each and every step in your collaboration to sign before he has agreed to have another meeting with you and move on. All tiny details have significant meaning for him and it might be good for both of you in the long term perspective. However, in the UK, as an example, in some cases it’s just enough to express oral agreement and shake hands to start building a plot. Just different approaches, none is good or bad.

Some people prefer conversation breadth - making shallow superficial talks, discussing general ideas, opinions, thoughts, etc. At the same time, others will stick to conversation depth – concise phrases, real motives of relationship, priorities, goals, tasks…

Be aware when observing behavior other than that you are used to. Try to dig deeper and see whether your basic principles, such as trust, openness, reliability, coincide. Tune yourself and ask if you are ready to accept the differences in your approaches or you’d better step off in the beginning.

What are you basic principles for building relationships?
