EXECUTIVE SKILLS

Updated: Aug 13, 2019

It may come as a surprise that the skills that make you a good employee aren't necessarily the same that make you a good leader. A good C-level exec has to lead teams and contribute to the overall business strategy and company mission, seeking out new opportunities and directions for the brand development rather than demonstrate technical expertise.

Our greetings to everyone!

Almost all companies nowadays have CEO, COO and CFO roles. A C-level executive is a strategic manager of a team – the chief. At first glance, being a C-level exec might seem like a dream come true. He/she is the one who makes decisions and leads the team. An office on the top floor with a great view, an assistant who takes care of your personal scheduling, an inexcusably high salary plus some stock options…

Have you ever wondered how a C-level executive in your company got his/her C-suite job? Have you also thought of extremely high level of responsibility and permanent stress? No private time? Years put for getting excellent education, immense experience, upgrading leadership skills…?

What skills C-level jobs require to make busy lives of executives more streamlined? Honestly, we are convinced that to become a top exec does not only mean to possess experience.

It may come as a surprise that the skills that make you a good employee aren't necessarily the same that make you a good leader. To be successful C-suites must be clear communicators. Along with prioritizing, good execs know how to get to the point. They simply don’t have time for abstract ideas. But how to stay up-to-speed on topics when you are not involved in the day-to-day work? By asking strong questions that will give useful information. By trusting those in their team as they are as good as the people they lead. And these are soft skills, aren’t they?

In addition to having a business sense, a great C-suite must know how to communicate ideas effectively, be able to earn support of their ideas, motivate and direct teams. People are their greatest asset. They must learn about the company's diverse culture and ways of doing things.

There are four basic areas they must govern – business, corporate culture, team and self. A successful executive must be prepared for the demands of the role and take time to identify personal strengths and weaknesses.

Do you aspire to be a C-level executive one day? If yes, then first think about abilities and qualities you need to possess to get there and only then show your company you are up to the task of joining these ranks.

Business Etiquette is a reliable tool to help you create your Executive image if you seek a C-level position. One of the most important soft skills a potential C-level exec must demonstrate is a communication skill. NETWORKING serves you well to build relationships with people in your industry who can put in a good word for you. Many companies hire candidates for executive roles based on recommendations from both internal and external contacts. So take care of your positive reputation and get to know people in your industry or related industries. That is how they will notice and identify you as a strong talent.

Be prepared to network. Networking is interaction in order to create relationships, connections, and opportunities for your professional future.

It doesn't mean you have to know someone important to “be given" a job. On the contrary, it means building relationships that can lead to other relationships that can lead to success. That's why it's called networking—you're creating a net of personal contacts.

That doesn't mean you should immediately make your sales pitch as soon as you shake hands with a new person. It means you should know how to introduce yourself and explain your role properly - i.e., naturally. Business Etiquette prompts you HOW.
